A distinction can be made whether or not equilibrium relations are enough to solve:

  • support reactions (external static indeterminancy)

  • section forces (internal static indeterminancy)

These two categories are treated together in chapter 4.5.2 and 4.5.3 of the book Engineering Mechanics Volume 1 (Hartsuijker and Welleman, 2006).

For truss structures, the analysis is simplified as shown in chapter 9.2.2 of the book Engineering Mechanics Volume 1 (Hartsuijker and Welleman, 2006).

Exercises#

  • If you’re a TU Delft student, you can practise with the following ANS exercises.

  • Exercises 4.11 - 4.22, in chapter 4.6 of the book Engineering Mechanics Volume 1 (Hartsuijker and Welleman, 2006). Ignore questions regarding kinematic determinancy. Answers are available on this website.

  • Exercise 9.6, in chapter 9.4 of the book Engineering Mechanics Volume 1 (Hartsuijker and Welleman, 2006). Ignore questions regarding kinematic determinancy. Answers are available on this website.
